The Secretary of the North Central Section and Program Chair (Candace Granberg, MD), consulted with other members of the Program Committee and the NCS Executive Committee members, including the current Past President (John T. Stoffel, MD), President (Ed Cherullo, MD), President- Elect (Thomas Gardner), Women In Urology Committee Chair (Denise Asafu-Adjei , MD), Young Urologist Committee Chair (Nathan D. Grunewald MD, MBA, FACS), Health Care Policy Chair (Kevin Koo, MD, MPH), and APP liaison (Charles R. Powell, II, MD, FPMRS) as well as several experts in their respective subspecialties who voluntarily helped build various sessions regarding the needs we are attempting to fulfill through our annual scientific program. It was agreed by the above that there continues to be significant educational needs for our annual meeting and scientific program. Urologic abnormalities can present with a myriad of clinical symptoms and signs. Accurate differential diagnosis and disease management, which meets current standards of care, requires ongoing review of the presentations of various urologic abnormalities as well as the appropriate use of safe and cost-effective imaging modalities and various pharmacologic, minimally invasive, and operative management options. In addition, advancements in medical science and progress in management of various urologic diseases require basic and clinical research. Presentation and discussion of such peer-reviewed summaries and results of investigations provide “cutting edge” updates for practicing clinicians and essential feedback to researchers on the practical applications and translation of their investigations to clinical practice. The American Urological Association provided many services and Health Policy support to practicing Urologists in the NCS region and the Past President, AUA Secretary, AUA Chairman of Education, NCS Board Representative, will provide an update on the activities of the AUA.

After attending this CME activity, participants will be able to: 

1. Apply Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) in urologic practice using AUA Guidelines.
2. Review the evolution of minimally invasive surgical approaches in pediatric urology.
3. Address the needs that pediatric patients with congenital urologic conditions have as they transition into adult clinics.
4. Administer proper workup and management of children with posterior urethral valves.
5. Deliver cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment options to patients with prostate cancer.
6. Analyze alternative treatment strategies for non-muscle invasive and muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
7. Integrate proper treatments for bladder cancer, prostate cancer, kidney cancer, testis cancer, and penile cancer.
8. Integrate evidence-based treatments for BPH, male infertility, URPS, reconstructive and other urologic conditions.
9. Interpret emerging data and novel treatments for non-oncologic urologic conditions including pelvic pain, radiation complications and necrotizing fasciitis.
10. Manage complications of urologic surgery with increased confidence.
11. Review the use of novel technologies in endourologic procedures.
12. Utilize expertise regarding role simulation plays in resident training to initiate development of a simulation program with appropriate outcomes measures.
13. Incorporate new technologies and treatments that are emerging in urology into practice.
14. Discuss topics germane to advanced practice providers to assist in their delivery of urologic care.
15. Analyze the impact of policy changes on urologic practice, including coding and billing changes and insurance coverage issues.
16. Increase awareness of advocacy issues facing urologic providers and patients.
17. Share leadership opportunities and career pathways for young urologists.
18. Evaluate concerns facing young urologists and women in urology.
19. Discuss the historical aspects of urology and the innovation that has arisen within the NCS.
